The Evolution of Silicon Valley Philanthropy: “Disruption” and the Implications for Educational Development in Pandemic Times

NORRAG in collaboration with IHEID Interdisciplinary Programme organised the third event in the “Graduate Institute Education Series” on 30 April 2020. The event titled the Evolution of Silicon Valley Philanthropy: “Disruption” and the Implications for Educational Development in Pandemic Times was organised as part of Gita Steiner-Khamsi classes at the Graduate Institute, Geneva. NORRAG advisor Lara Patil was the guest speaker and addressed a mixed audience of students at the Graduate Institute and external participants.

The aim of the presentation was to trace the contours of evolving philanthropic engagement among technology philanthropists in Silicon Valley, the presentation specifically addressed two central questions: how has the relationship between philanthropy and business changed among Silicon Valley donors over time? And, what are the potential implications of these emerging philanthropic practices for education development in pandemic times?

Lara Patil joined NORRAG as an advisor in July 2018. Her research interests situate at the intersection of donor logic, global education, and the role of non-state actors in development. She brings with her professional experience working as an Education Strategist for Intel Corporation where she advised the foundation, corporate social responsibility programs, and business units on matters related to technology and education. In this role, she represented Intel in multi-stakeholder partnerships for education and served as coordinator of the Private Sector and Foundations Constituency and member of the Country Grants and Performance Committee for the Global Partnership for Education. Lara holds a doctorate in Communication and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
