Book Launch: Decolonisation, Anti-Racism, and Legal Pedagogy

ABOUT THE BOOK

“Decolonisation, Anti-Racism, and Legal Pedagogy” offers an international breadth of historical and theoretical insights into recent efforts to “decolonise” legal education across the world.

With a specific focus on post- and decolonial thought and anti-racist methods in pedagogy, this edited collection provides an accessible illustration of pedagogical innovation in teaching and learning law. Chapters cover civil and common law legal systems, incorporate cases from non-state Indigenous legal systems, and critically examine key topics such as decolonisation and anti-racism in criminology, colonialism and the British Empire, and court process and Indigenous justice. The book demonstrates how teaching can be modified and adapted to address long-standing injustice in the curriculum.

Offering a systematic collection of theoretical and practical examples of anti-racist and decolonial legal pedagogy, this volume will appeal to curriculum designers and law educators as well as to undergraduate and post-graduate level law teachers and researchers.

AUTHORS AND PRESENTERS

Suhraiya Jivraj is a Reader in Law and Social Justice and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Her previous experience includes working for international NGOs and grassroots organisations in the human rights and anti-discrimination fields. She teaches and researches in the areas of Public Law including Human Rights, Race, Religion & Law, Intersectional and Decolonial Approaches to Equalities Law & Policy and social justice. Her work draws on critical race/religion theories and de-colonial studies, exploring contemporary socio-legal problematics including intersecting inequalities, foregrounding feminist/queer of colour perspectives. Her work brings together an ethical commitment to critical and inclusive pedagogy and decolonising work.

 Foluke Adebisi is an Associate Professor in Law at the University of Bristol, UK. Foluke holds an LL.M with Distinction from Lancaster University in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. Her Ph.D, was also completed at Lancaster University. She has a background in legal practice and NGO work. At Lancaster University, she taught Contract, Employment Law, Criminal Law, Evidence and English Legal Systems and Methods. She currently teaches Law and Race, Rich Law Poor Law, as well as Health Law and the Body. She has also taught on Contract Law (both undergraduate and postgraduate), Foundations of Business Law as well as Law of Tort. She is the founder and Director of Forever Africa Conference and Events – FACE. She writes about law, Africa, pedagogy and life in general at Foluke’s African Skies.

Ntina Tzouvala is an Associate Professor at the Australian National University College of Law and a Global Fellow at the Centre for International Law of the National University of Singapore.  Ntina joined the ANU College of Law as a Senior Lecturer in July 2020. Prior to this appointment she was an ARC Laureate Postdoctoral Fellow at Melbourne Law School. She obtained her PhD from Durham Law School (UK) in 2016 and she also worked as a lecturer at the same institution. Her work focuses on the political economy, history and theory of international law. She is especially interested in historical materialism, deconstruction, feminist and queer legal thoery.  Her first monograph, Capitalism as Civilisation: A History of International Law, will be published by Cambridge University Press in late 2020.
