FreshEd: Building Evidence on Education in Emergencies with Mary Mendenhall

Some thirty-five percent of out-of-school children live in conflict-affected areas. However, before anyone can act to change this fact, information and data on education in emergencies is critical, but inadequate in most cases. In the most recent FreshEd talk Mary Mendenhall, editor of NSI 02, describes what education in emergencies (EiE) embraces and how complex it is. She mentions what sort of EiE data is available, why it matters and which role politics and technology play in collecting such data.

Mary Mendenhall is Associate Professor of Practice and the Director of the International and Comparative Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is a member of the Inter-agency Network for Education in Emergencies’ (INEE) Standards and Practice Working Group and has edited NORRAG Special Issue 02 on data collection and evidence building to support education in emergencies.
