About us

The Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship is the first academic centre in Africa dedicated to advancing social innovation and entrepreneurship. It was established as a specialised unit at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business in late 2011. The Bertha Centre’s Innovative Finance (IF) Initiative is built around the need to develop an impact-focused investment market in Sub-Saharan Africa, where social and environmental objectives are set and measured to demonstrate deliberate change.

About the Role

The Bertha Centre is seeking to appoint a consultant as a Senior Research Manager on a fixed term basis for six months with skills in impact measurement and evaluation for work within the Innovative Finance portfolio. The role will focus on leading measurement and evaluation work to develop rigorous assessments of the development impact and funding additionality of innovative financing mechanisms. This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual with experience in co-creation and a collaborative approach to international research projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership of the UCT partnership in the “More and better financing: Innovative Financing in Education to Leave No One Behind” (IFE-LNOB) project based at the Bertha Centre managing the research team, engaging with subject matter and critical questions, taking intellectual ownership of the research project.
  • Guide co-creation and collaboration within the UCT team and with IFE-LNOB partners based at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies – NORRAG (IHEID-NORRAG) in Geneva, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences – Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research (TISS-CEIAR) in Mumbai.
  • Plan, manage and organise collaborative work within the UCT team ensuring that project milestones are met and that there is consistent communication with the project secretariat.
  • Organise, lead and participate in team meetings at the international, regional and project levels.
  • Track and report on research progress and outcomes, including publications, presentations, and grant awards.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including funding agencies, collaborators, and industry partners.
  • Take responsibility for the preparation and submission of the IFE-2-LNOB narrative and financial reports.
  • Engaging in other research support as defined by the IF team, as capacity allows.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in research administration or a related field
  • Experience managing a research team
  • Strong understanding of research methodologies and best practices
  • Excellent project management, budgeting, and organisational skills
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and research administration software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a university research environment
  • Proven track record of securing external research funding
  • Knowledge of specific funding agencies and their priorities
