UNESCO-IBE supporting the 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development 22-24 May 2024

NORRAG’s Executive Director, Moira Faul was invited to participate in a UNESCO-IBE expert meeting in Geneva to develop a Reader supporting the 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development. Experts from around the world contributed insights.

This work aims to contribute to “the new UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace and Human Rights, International Understanding, Cooperation, Fundamental Freedoms, Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development, which is commonly referred to as the Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development is a landmark guidance document that defines what needs to evolve in and through education to accomplish these goals”.

In addition to commenting on other themes raised in the meeting, Moira gave a presentation on the promises and pitfalls of the rise of AI in and for education and digital inequalities, referring to NORRAG’s recent Policy Insights publication AI and Digital Inequities

“AI in society is not a binary on/off. But the question of how we can prevent AI from reflecting and reinforcing existing inequities must be answered. This collection brings together 29 authors from 5 continents who provide key takeaways for decision makers, educators and students seeking to support more equitable and ethical design and deployment of AI in education across the full gamut of ethical concerns. The authors in this collection foreground the ethical challenges that arise with regards to AI use in education whether as a private, public or common good, and invite you to put human and planetary flourishing at the heart of AI decision making, development and deployment.”
